How the photo shoot planning starts?
Photographer Location Recommendation: Paletta Lakefront Park, Burlington, Ontario.
The photo shoot always starts with a plan. Melonie Novic contacted me and we got to talking about what she was looking for in this photo session. Her kids are growing up and she wanted to capture some classic, frame worth portraits and group shots as well as throw in a couple fun holiday aspects for their Christmas cards this year.
To fit her style & the variation of shots she was looking for I suggested one of my favorite spots for family photo shoots Paletta Lakefront Park in Burlington. It feature beautiful classic stone steps , a lakefront view as well as pine tress to give that extra wintery classic feel.

The next most important aspect of being a photographer is helping the client figure out what to wear on photoshoot day!
I sent Melonie the idea of a burgundy, tan & black colour scheme as well as outfit options for each of the kids including knit sweaters, dressy casual shoes & a touch of plaid. I also told her to make sure to bring hats, scarfs & mittens for each of the kids!
PRO TIP: Bringing easy to put on and off accessories is always a good idea to add some variation to the shots & poses!
Props & Extras for Kids Photoshoots?
I always love to add classic & simple props especially during the winter season.
Knowing the kids are in Grade 7 & the classic look Melonie wanted as well as some Christmas card shots, I decided to bring along some holiday some hot chocolate cups with candy canes, a warm wintery blanket & a Santa hat for each of them.
I’m a strong believer in taking pictures of people not the props. Meaning simplicity is always key. My goal with images is to keep a classic timeless feel so 5, 10, 15 years down the line they won’t look over done or outdated. We all know those pictures that we ourselves look back on as adults and think “WHAT WERE MY PARENTS THINKING?!”… But certain classic items never go out of style that’s always my priority!
Sibling Photoshoot Day & Final Image Post Production
Photoshoot day is my favorite day. On photo shoot day, I met the fun & vibrate James, Dean & Alex, their family dog Mikey in the park. The connection these triplets have to each other is so evident and it shines through in every one of the finals shots.
In post production, I added some sunshine in photoshop (it was a very cloudy day). Added warm colour tones giving them that cozy wintery feel and compliments the red in the wardrobe. For pre teens & teenagers especially, I make sure to naturally retouch the skin. Meaning I remove any temporary blemishes but maintaining skin texture and highlight natural features!
