How the kids photography planning starts?
Photographer Location Recommendation: Coronation Park, Oakville, Ontario.
The photo shoot always starts with a plan. Valerie contacted me because she was looking for some summer photos of her 5 year old daughter. She wanted to capture her little girl outside in the summer weather. I instantly recommended taking the photos at golden hour. Golden hour is the hour just before and during sunset, this is the absolute best time lighting wise to photograph anyone outside.
To fit her style & the variation of shots she was looking for I suggested a nearby park in Oakville. It features a light dirt path, a wide grassy field and hundreds of trees that the light shines through at sunset.

The next most important aspect of being a photographer is helping the client figure out what to wear on photoshoot day!
I’m a strong believer in taking pictures of people not the props. Meaning simplicity is always key. My goal with images is to keep a classic timeless feel so 5, 10, 15 years down the line they won’t look over done or outdated. We all know those pictures that we ourselves look back on as adults and think “WHAT WERE MY PARENTS THINKING?!”… But certain classic items never go out of style that’s always my priority!
Valerie brought a bunch of outfits the day of & I helped her go through and choose the best camera worthy outfits! We ultimately decided on a classic white summer dress for the first outfit. The second outfit is one of my favourites, a long sleeve and overalls. We accessories with some sparkly clips, pearl bobby pins & headbands.
PRO TIP: Bringing easy to put on and off accessories is always a good idea to add some variation to the shots & poses!
Sunset Photoshoot at Golden Hour
Photoshoot day is my favorite day. On photo shoot day, this 5 year old was filled with energy. As a photographer, I love to use that natural energy to capture the best shots. How I do that? Lucky for me I was a kids coach long before I was a photographer so I have plenty of tricks up my sleeve. The key is to make sure they’re actually having fun during the whole shoot!
In post production, I enhance natural features & colour correct images that adds an extra summery feel. When an image is back lit like these ones, I always retouch flyaways in the hair to clean up the image(again naturally, or it will look fake!). My retouching philosophy is ALWAYS to keep it natural, if a client can’t see what I’ve done I know I’ve done my job.
As photographer, my clients reaction is ALWAYS my favourite part…
